Porirua Alternative School
The Alternative School is a project of Praxis based in Cannons Creek, Porirua. It offers a second chance learning opportunity for young people who have become disengaged from mainstream education. The team of teachers, youth workers and community volunteers support young people who are referred by local secondary schools, the police and welfare agencies.
Our initial goal is to connect with young people who often arrive angry, violent or depressed. The school provides an environment that aims to help each young person turn their behaviour around, re-engage with education and develop social skills that will help them make a success of further education, employment and parenthood after they leave the programme.
Porirua Alternative School is a member of the AE Awards project; a coalition of community education providers who are working to improve the educational outcomes for young people in alternative education and transition programmes.
